The Nelson Tasman region is cleared for take-off
“The Nelson Tasman region is cleared for take-off,” says Lynda Keene, Chief Executive of Nelson Tasman Tourism. The communities of Nelson City and Tasman District are keen to welcome returning visitors and holiday-makers to the region over the Christmas/New Year holiday period.” All towns in the region and major visitor accommodation, activities and attractions are open for visitors including Golden Bay and all swimming spots have been re-opened. Swimming at Tahunanui beach and access to Cable Bay are due to re-open later in the week.
The region’s three national parks - Kahurangi, Nelson Lakes and Abel Tasman are all open and operational, with hiking trails clear and camping spots and most huts open. In addition to this, Nelson Lakes’ Blue Lake was recently found to be the clearest lake in the world in a study performed by NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research).
Totaranui Campground in the Abel Tasman National Park is open and operational and boat access can for the first time be gained from Port Tarakohe with Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle. Aqua Taxi and other boat operators have also come on board with special prices and promotions for campers wanting to access what is one of the region’s most popular camping grounds. With a ballot booking system in place, only 850 campers are lucky enough to stay at Totaranui each Christmas and New Year, however availability has now opened and campers are advised to get in quick.
Any visitor who requires an update on accommodation bookings can contact their accommodation provider direct or call on 0800 NEL TAS (0800 635 827).
Ms Keene says. “A number of residential homes and communities have been severely affected by recent weather and our thoughts go out to those approaching Christmas that will still be in clean-up mode.”
